Stereographic Projection Dress
About
I designed and created a dress that demonstrates stereographic projection. The 3D-printed bodice represents the sphere. When lying flat, the gridded skirt that I hand-sewed illustrates the projection of the sphere from the point of projection (the top of my head) onto a 2D plane.
The idea behind this dress stemmed from my love of art and mathematics. I have always been in awe of dimensional projection: from the fourth dimension to the third and from the third to the second, such as in stereographic projection. I wanted to share that excitement with others, and I did so through art. I specifically chose to express it through fashion to show that math is not necessarily abstract; it is something that surrounds us and something everyone, in a way, wears.
Process
Mechanisms of The Sea
I worked in a group of 5 on these two pieces for a small fashion show in April 2026. Both emphasized the sea and focused on recycled fashion. They also combined artistic design with mathematics and engineering.
Jellyfish
The “Jellyfish,” which I wore, was made from cut-up water bottles. Lights lit up at the end of the top with each walk, where the pressure/bounce completed a circuit connected to a battery using copper tape. I designed the look of the piece and made the structure while my group members worked on the circuitry.
Jacob’s Ladder Skirt
The second piece, the “Jacob’s Ladder skirt,” was made out of recycled soda cans. It was inspired by the ripple of waves and the toy called a “Jacob’s ladder,” which creates that ripple effect. Each “ladder” was connected to a servo that flipped it. I mainly drew the designs, designed the shape, and worked on some of the Jacob’s ladder mechanism.
